As a result, the shooting of 24-year-old Resheed Wallace shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, May 10, produced more questions than answers.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said that city police found a mortally wounded Wallace on Pearsall Avenue near Garfield Avenue while responding to a shots-fired report shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, May 10.
However, police radio transmissions referred to the accident, which reportedly involved a front gate struck after a vehicle jumped the curb.
Then came the shooting discovery and a call to the prosecutor's office.
Wallace was pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center moments later.
What may or may not have happened wasn't yet clear.
For one thing, a gun and a single shell casing were recovered, responders said.
Plus, Suarez said only that her Homicide Unit is investigating the incident with Jersey City police and that "no arrests have been made at this time."
She didn't refer to the reported accident and didn't specifically say what investigators suspect happened.
Rather, she said, "the cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner's Office."
That means it's not yet officially a homicide -- or anything else -- at the moment.
